Tell us about your business journey

I am a graduate from NIFT & have done few courses in jewellery & metalsmithing from SINGEM.
My experience in the International & Domestic fashion/Retail industry and my fascination for jewellery & arts , made me venture into starting my own label. I have always made time to make mixed media jewellery & styling for family, friends and TV / corporate commercials, this led me to start House of Kalart (HoK) in 2018 & there has been no looking back.

2

What motivated you to become a Skillpreneur?

As a child, I have always been fascinated by arts & crafts. My inspiration was my aunt who would teach me different forms of crafts such as glass painting, origami, & clay modelling during my summer vacations. I would constantly draw design on my school books, and I developed an interest in jewellery during my study of fashion designing. This led me to combine two of my passions, art & jewellery, which became a stepping stone to my career.

3

How did you know when you had the right idea?

Colours & textures not only inspire me, it also instigates a play of design in my head and to be able to actually touch , hold and add character to something that was just an idea is an immense joy. This was a great motivational factor that got me to finalise on this idea.

4

What is your favorite aspect of being a Skillpreneur?

Our PM Mr Narendra Modi recently said “Where there is a soul, there is a story.’’ He was referring to the age old tradition of storytelling.
There is a story behind every person. Through HoK, I get to reflect the essence behind the stories of each individual along with their nuances and depict them through my jewellery.

5

Share any interesting experience after becoming a Skillpreneur.

I had faced challenges in R&D initially trying to execute the idea of marrying art or surface ornamentation with metalsmithing, replacing art in place of a stone and creating a well-crafted fashionable jewellery. Challenges like these make everyday interesting and I get to learn something new as well.

6

What makes your business unique?

Surface ornamentations are the foundation to my designing. I design premium jewellery where painting, drawing and embroidery is married with metalsmithing to create a well handcrafted fashion jewellery.

7

What Drives You to Keep Going When It's Really Tough?

When the going gets tough, I remind myself that I am responsible for my own happiness. I strongly believe in & am an advocate of 'Self Love'. I practice yoga & mindful meditation to keep myself calm & motivated.

8

What are some of the mistakes you wished you could've avoided?

Entrepreneurship is a journey where we learn through trial & errors. There is no one fit solution for any business or individual. Your business is a larger part of who you are. Like any excited start-ups, I had glorified the idea in my head and assumed everyone will grab the product. Though I knew potential customer survey is a key process, I skipped the process. As the going got tougher, I realized the importance of it and started listening to my customers.

9

How do you achieve work-life balance?

After working in the export houses & corporates, I realized the importance of work-life balance. I make sure to give enough time for my work, family/friends and myself. All are equally important and I make sure I schedule everything accordingly.

10

What advice would you give someone who is interested in starting their own business?

First, embrace your journey as an entrepreneur not as a job but as your identity. Starting a business takes time, hard work and a tremendous amount of patience. You will need determination and persistence, and a willingness to take personal responsibility for your successes and failures. Always remember "Everything can be figured out'' over time. Identify what you are good at, identify what is your competitive advantage, focus on those things and build on them.
Keep a positive attitude and listen to your customers. Take advice.
Most important of all ''BELIEVE IN YOU''
