PAPERZ ARTISTRY – A new perspective to paper art was officially established on 1st of May 2018. It was not a smooth ride and still it isn’t, it had ups and downs but the end result is always so refreshing and brings the positivity back. What started as a curiosity for papercuts has now turned into a brand PAPERZ ARTISTRY. This year we have started taking orders for Corporate Gifting too. So that’s a new feather in our Cap. My proud moment was when Paperz Artistry got featured in 2 of India’s leading Newspaper, Lokmat and Hitvada.

What motivated you to become a Skillpreneur?

I was always inclined towards art since childhood. My Mother is a great artist, maybe that’s why it got genetically transferred to me. I had worked for more than 7 years in corporate in Creative field in Mumbai as a Designer. It was always back of my mind to have something of my own where I can create what I want to without any limitations and that’s the reason I became a Skillpreneur.

3

How did you know when you had the right idea?

To get the Right Idea and to know that its Right For me too was easy for me (May be I was lucky enough) After I got into Psaligraphy Art or Papercutting Art it just intrigued me, the details, the fragile nature of the subject which need to be hand carved using just a pair of blades, I decided to work on this and excel this art form. In the start whatever artworks I made I got orders for those too. So that was the point I decided to take it professionally.

4

What is your favorite aspect of being a Skillpreneur?

My most favorite aspect of being a Business Woman is that I get to work on my own terms and I can create whatever I want to or wish too may be in difficulty level or on financial terms without any boundaries and that I feel makes the art to open up more.

5

Share any interesting experience after becoming a Skillpreneur.

Interesting part I would say that now I dare to take the leap in terms of creating new products as there is no one on my head to tell me the boundaries which I had to earlier bind myself when I was working for a company

What makes your business unique?

Have you ever imagined typing a letter without a backspace key or a Spell-check, horrifying, isn’t it? However, there are some arts difficult than one’s imagination. PSALIGRAPHY ART or PAPERCUTTING is one of the most intricate and a very slow art form of hand cutting paper with sharp blades from a single sheet of paper. In this each artwork is meticulously cut out with a craft knife from a single sheet of paper and can take several hours to more than a week to complete and you don’t have an option to correct if you wrongly strike a blade, the only way is to start all over again. Intricacies and detailing are the core elements of paper cutting art. The thing with paper cuts is that one doesn’t know the final output until the end this difficult nature of this art makes it so precious. I hand carve each and every artwork. And for customized artworks I design and then cut them as per client’s requirement which gives it a personal touch. These artworks are then sandwiched between two glass frame which gives the art an unique floating effect with a transparent look.

What Drives You to Keep Going When It's Really Tough?

I manage my business from home, it does get tiring and difficult to manage everything sometimes as I need to work for hours sitting at a single position designing and cutting the artwork using blades, it does affect physically, mentally & emotionally. But my 4 year old kid I would say he is my support system after my husband. As my kid Pratyush spends lot of time around me when I am doing papercutting. Sometimes when I feel to give up on a situation he would just say something from such a different perspective that it would motivate anyone I would say. Sometimes we underestimate kids coz of their age but I would say they understand more than we could think off.

8

What are some of the mistakes you wished you could've avoided?

I wish I could have avoided taking granted my health in course of my business. As I need to sit on 1 position with all my attention during papercutting it had got me with severe back and shoulder pain which I think I could have avoided.

9

How do you achieve work-life balance?

Managing home, an active toddler, neck back pain as while paper cutting I spend hours sitting and cutting with all the concentration at one place. It does get challenging at times, mentally, emotionally and physically. But I manage it with my closed ones help. My husband is my big support system in sharing all the household chores when I am busy in completing an assignment or order. Without any support I would not have been able to keep a proper balance between my work and life.

What advice would you give someone who is interested in starting their own business?

Those who wants or are thinking of starting something of their own should definitely give that thought a go after thorough learning and know of market. You just need to give yourself some time to know what you actually want and everything else just happens. As hard work will always be paid sooner or later. Just keep trying you will definitely achieve your dreams. We can always start from anywhere if we really want to. It’s definitely not easy but the fruits which it gives are worth the hard work. The journey helps you grow as a person in a better way. Just be kind to yourself and others too.
